Does anyone know where I could get the program Train Dispatcher. It
is a simulation game. I don't know who is the publisher. I would be
willing to buy it from someone. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Marc

Try "Toys R' Us" for Commodore 1702 monitors. They still have them in this
part of the USA (Portland/Beaverton ORegon). Most other stores have replaced
the 1702 with the 1802. A 1902 and 1902A are also available but I believe that
they are RGB only. Another good monitor is the C.Itoh CM1000 monitor which is
available for $399 at all Zenith/Heath dealers. It is a totally universal
monitor, it has provisions for composite video, separated video, RGB, RGBI and
XRBG. It will hook up to an Atari 8 bit, Commodore, Zenith, IBM, Compaq, etc.
Very good buy at $399 (regularly $599 -- per the catalog).

The Commodore 1902[A] have inputs for normal composite video as well as the
digital RGBI that is used in the C-128. With proper cableing, I suppose that
any RGBI output could be feed to them as well.

1 - cannot answer as to how good omniview is, if it is as good as the new Atari
XEP80, then it is excellent. However, most 80 column readouts are much
better if you use a non-composite video output and monitor for same. Atari
is not composite only output! You can get separated video which is much
better. Both a Commodore 1702 and the C.Itoh CM1000 monitors will accept a
separated video output signal in lieu of the normal NTSC composite video,
and believe me the difference is amazing.
2 - it depends upon which 256k upgrade that you use. Both the Newell and the
RAMBO XL upgrades require one resistor unsoldered, and from 4 to 6 wires
soldered at various places. Generally the wires can be soldered to
existing thru plated holes. Both of these upgrades want you to bend up 4
pins on one of the IC's (either PIA or ANTIC, I forget) and solder wires to
them--DON'T. It is much easier to trace where the pins go to and solder to
a thru plated hole on the same run. There is another 256k upgrade now
being sold in the Portland area that I have seen that utilized a four pin
connector to go to the IC without any soldering. (May have been sold by
Best Electronics when they were up here for show???) Also, Best
Electronics has a series of upgrades for any Atari, but these involve heavy
amounts of wiring. Both Newell and RAMBO XL involve essentially
piggybacking a new ecboard with some additional wiring.
3 - Regardless of how much David Young protests, neither the Newell upgrade nor
the RAMBO XL are absolutely 100% compatible with an Atari 130XE as neither
uses the "Freddy" chip. RAMBO XL has a lot of compatability problems
regarding what is shown on the screen, it does not maintain the proper
display, David can explain this better then I can. Newell is about 99%
compatible, however, it takes a toggle switch installed to allow its use
with XLent's Typesetter program (I may have name wrong) -- if you do not
plan on purchasing this then don't worry. HOWEVER, it also is not 100%
compatible with the Atari Planetarium program. Planetarium will work on a
800XLE (my nomenclature for a 256k 800XL) but during the "slewing" command
and during other calculations, it allows garbage on the screen, whereas a
130XE shows a different colored screen during the calculations. (I have
tried Planetarium on my 130XE, 800XLE and 1200XLE, it works 100% with the
130XE, as above on the 800XLE, and has a lot of bugs on the 1200XLE. In
fact it will not load on a 1200XL or XLE without a translator disk. Both
of my XLE's are Newell upgrades.) When Newell or someone else starts using
the Freddy chip as Neil @ Atari suggests, then they should be 100%
compatible. 99% is not bad, however.
4 - I would suggest getting and installing both omniview and 256k togeth
5 - "RAMROD XL" is "RAMBO XL", I believe. At any rate, it is a competitor to
the Newell upgrade and is not as compatible.
Suggest that you talk to David Young or John Sangster, they can help with some
of the more technical aspects of this, I am merely a hardware kludge installer,
read kit-basher, I merely follow the instructions. Connect wire a to pin b,
etc.

As usual, my IBM-XT dropped several words/lines. In talking about installing
one or the other I suggested 256k first, then Omniview, or both together. What
is missing is a suggestion that David Young comment, as he is the originator of
all of the Omni*** software and has worked with Newell on his upgrade and in
fact sells the Newell upgrade to go with some of his Omni*** line.
Please excuse me for using an IBM-XT, at work my 8 bit machine is frowned upon.
They do work much better and more reliable.

Has anyone on the net had much experience yet with the Atari Planetarium
program? Specifically, what are the compatibility problems with it and an 800
and/or 1200XL and/or any 256k expanded 1200XL or 800XL's???? The manual says
that you must have an 130XE, or an 65XE or an 800XL. It would seem to me that
it should be compatible with an 800 and with the translator disk it should be
compatible with an 1200XL. Believe me, it is not. Since it is supposed to be
used with both the 800XL and the 65XE, you would not think that it would do any
funnies with expanded memory. However, I have found that with a 256k 800XLE,
it goes bananas during calculations (skewing, etc.) and dumps garbage to the
screen. It goes back to normal after the calcs are done. During the same
calcs on a 130XE, it merely changes the screen colors. To get it to load to a
1200XL requires the Atari translator A program, and a that it has some bugs in
it that are fatal or near fatal. On an 1200XL, it does not increment the
latitude and longitude properly. Instead of gradually increasing (or
decreasing if you are going the other way) it jumps up and down all over the
place, so that you cannot accurately set your l & l. I find it hard to believe
but it appears that Atari has issued a program that violates its own rules (OS
input places or what I do not know)! Has anyone tried it on a plane jane 800
or 400? (The 400 would probably have to have 64k memory, similarly what
happens on a 64k 600XL?)
Would Neil or anyone else at Atari care to comment? (Or do you guys only read
the comp.sys.atari.st files now-a-days??)

This newsgroup is being renamed from net.micro.atari8 to comp.sys.atari.8bit.
This renaming will gradually take place over the next few weeks.
More and more messages posted to this newsgroup will be aliased
into the new newsgroup as they pass through the net, and people
will begin to post to the new group. After a few weeks, the
old name will be removed.
This note is to inform you of the renaming so you can begin to

I feel that this new newsgroup name could cause some confusion. I suggest
that this group be called comp.sys.new.atari.400.800.xl.xe.8bit.2nibbles.1byte
instead as this would be much more sensible.
