I am looking for a printer driver to use with an Atari 800XL, the Atariwriter cartridge, and a Panasonic KX-P1091 printer. Does anyone have one or know where I can get one?

There are a few good terminal emulators for the 8bit. Chameleon - emulates a VT52, ADM3A, and others (19.95, ANTIC Catalog) Kermit - emulates a VT52 (free) VT10SQ - emulates a VT100 (free)
I've used all three of them and they all do good emulation. -- -Marc L. Appelbaum Arpa:appel@topaz.rutgers.edu Uucp:{ames, cbosgd, harvard, moss, seismo}!rutgers!topaz.rutgers.edu!appelbau Bitnet:appelb@zodiac.bitnet GEnie:M.APPELBAUM

I have used all three of the terminal emulators mentioned by Marc Appelbaum (Chameleon, Kermit and VT10SQ) and each has been useful. They all have shortcomings for talking to Unix systems though. Chameleon and Kermit create an 80-character line by using normal Atari character graphics to display ca. 40 characters and giving you [shift] START to control horizontal scrolling. OK for file transfer, but I find this intolerable for reading mail or for any kind of editing. VT10SQ uses bit-map graphics to create an 80 x 24 screen. I believe that the VT100 emulation is incomplete; the combination of VT10SQ, the VT100 termcap on our system, and Emacs (Unipress version) doesn't seem to be usable. Also, VT10SQ seems to have some strange ideas about character mappings. As far as I know, the sources aren't available for fixes or customization.
I've recently had good luck with VT52A.ACT, an ACTION! program posted here by Michael Jenkin in May 1986. It uses bit-map graphics to get 80 characters like VT10SQ. In my opinion, the characters are somewhat more readable. It emulates a VT52 (optionally, an extended VT52) that seems to get along much better with Emacs. The address on the original posting was ...!utcari!utai!jenkin if you want to inquire about availability and possible updates.

There is another VT100 emulator available for the 8-bit Ataris. It is called OmniCom, and runs on an 8-bit with the 80-column OMNIVIEW chip installed. I have never used VT10SQ, so I can't speak from personal experience, but I understand that OmniCom is an improvement over VT10SQ. Besides VT100 emulation (in 80 cols. of course), it also offers Kermit and Xmodem, and the latest version has ascii capture and a print-screen feature. I am quite pleased with it (I don't even have the latest version yet!). I _have_ used the Kermit + VT52 emulator, and the old Chameleon, and was more than ready for 80 columns.

Atari's 80-column device should make possible an 8-bit 80 column terminal emulator that doesn't produce eyestrain, when (if) it appears on the market. Scheduled release date for this product is June or July, I believe.

Anybody know if there is a terminal program for the 8 biters that will download files directly to disk? I have only 32K of memory and when my terminal program is running then I only have 15K to do download to. Any suggestions(other than getting a computer with more memory)?
Also, does anyone know of any good 8 bit Atari oriented boards in the Washington state area?
Thanks for any and all help,
-Dave Kinsman

Most terminal programs buffer the incomming data into the available RAM, and write it to disk when the buffer is full. If the program wrote directly to disk your file transfer would take 3-5 times longer. -- -Marc L. The Okimate 20 goes "Not Ready" when there is about 50 cents worth of ribbon still on the ribbon cartridge. Theoretically, you can send <ESC>'8' to the printer to disable the sensor, but this doesn't seem to work. There is also an internal DIP switch that disables the out-of-paper sensor, and which might affect the out-of-ribbon one as well. If I do change the switch, the manual warns that I should not leave the printer unattended. What happens if I forget? Does the ribbon advance motor get damaged? Alternatively, where is the %&$#! sensor? If I could find it, I could tape over it when I want to use a semi-exhausted ribbon.

Hi everyone,
Over 3 weeks ago, I ordered a US Doubler from White House Computers in Williamsport PA (ordered by phone, paid by plastic). I expected to get the package within a few days as I always had with other mail order houses. However, nothing has come yet, although the charge has appeared on my credit card bill. I will start the charge-back procedure if I can't get anything out of them!
The worst thing is that I can't reach them on the phone any more. They have 2 numbers; an 800 number for orders and a 717 number for service. The latter is open from 10 to 4 EDT. If I call outside of those hours on the 717 number, it rings and rings with no answer. Otherwise it is busy. I called quite literally a hundred times and it was always busy. Finally, I decided to get clever: I called at 9:45 and let it ring figuring they would answer it when they opened up. It rang for 25 minutes before I gave up. Of course when I called back immediately after, it was busy again.
As to their 800 number, it now rings and rings with no answer.
Question: Has anyone successfully gotten any merchandise from White House (they have a big ad on the inside front cover of Antic)? Does anyone know if they are still in business? Even more interesting, has anyone talked to them on the phone lately?
Thanks for any information.

Last summer, I ordered a 1050 drive & an Avatex modem from White House. The hardware arrived in short order, however, neither worked. I sent them back in the separate cartons they had arrived in, with the return authorization they had given me. They replaced the modem in about two weeks, but claimed to have never received the drive. I was therefore stuck for the $140. it cost me, since I had foolishly failed to send the things return-receipt, ASSUMING it wouldn't be needed. AmEx said since it HAD been received originally, and I had no record of returning it, that I was stuck for the charge.
I hope you have no trouble with the charge-back, and frankly I'd love to hear that they've gone belly-up.
