I've decided that the Turbo Duo is the way to go. So if you have a Turbo Duo let me know.

I have several 1702's although I don't get to use them with Atari's (yet). :) Be certain that you have the switch in the back set to the correct set of video ports. If it is set the oposite way.....the screen stays black. Also, don't be afraid to experiment with plugging in your cables. It is _very_ hard to kill a 1702. Sooner or later you will hit the right combination.

Well, okay, but the image is still mapped on *something* rather than just manipulated in two dimensions.
While we're picking nits, it was called Star Raiders 2 only after Atari failed to get the rights to use The Last Starfighter's name - or something like that, anyway. :-)

Just picked up an 800 xl at a yard sale.(thought it might be cool to have one).
My question is what should it do when i turn it on? I have no software for it and all it does is give me a black screen when i turn it on. ------------------------------------------------ As long as you are connecting from the phono connector to a TV- A black screen can mean several faults: Power Supply Antic, GTIA, CPU/OS, PIA, BASIC, ram chip or decoding bad. RF modulator bad.
Does holding down option bring up the tests when booted? I'd open the computer, and reseat all of the chips, then reboot.

Do the little memory boxes give particular chips that are bad?
Even whit bad ram wouldn't it still boot to basic? -------------------------------------------- The little boxes only designate ram in 1K increments, not bits(sigh). Still have to test each ram chip.
If a bit in a ramchip in the lowest 1K or so, tested bad, then the computer will jump to test, these areas are vital to O.S. operation(pointers, the stack, etc.)

B&C carries them Before you go all out, does any of the ram squares in the memory test show as red? And what is the numbers on top of the one socketed chip? If it is the OS ROM and its a custom one then all may still be OK. Try to boot it with the option key pressed and if you get BASIC then you have a tricked OS and nothing is wrong!

John Tibbets has a problem formattin disks on a 1050: "It gives you the flash" You are actually using a DOS to format the disks, right?
Cleaning the head with a damp drive cleaner works well, or a cotton swap, but don't get the pressure pad above it wet.
With the case open, its possible to reseat the chips, and make sure the disk and hub actually spin, and head moves.

OK, 19 out of 20 times, it is your 12 VDC power supply.
What Atari did was use a standard Atari 9VAC power brick to power them. But 9 VAC rectifies to 12.6 - diode forward drop - regulator forward drop or not enough.
So... they put in a voltage doubler circuit in there. Thing is, it runs so hot it the diodes break contact and you lose everything to do with the 12 VDC.

X marks the spot where the diodes are, huddled inbetween a couple of big caps.
