In the heyday of the 8-bits, back when people were using real hardware (not emulation), I don't think any red-blooded Atarian would've used any punctuation symbols in filenames -- even if some offbeat or relatively unusual Atari 8-bit Dos program would've sup- ported it. That's because ADOS 2.0 (i.e., Atari Company's Dos) and its main compatibles (including ADOS 2.5) didn't support punctuation marks in filenames. Using punctuation in filenames would've made such files incompatible with the overwhelming majority of other Atari 8-bitters as well as almost all of their software and programming and all the situations in which Atari programs and files were used, including BBSes.
Doing so now sounds like a recipe for disaster. But by all means, go ahead and do it! The way most people learn is by experience, and you'll enjoy the experience and all the extra time and effort at some point in the future when some Atari program you're running by emula- ation refuses to recognize illegal filenames and you're forced to fix dozens or hundreds of filenames by some roundabout method! That'll be fun, for sure! <grin> -- >>>----------------------------------------------<<< >>> david moeser -- erasmus39 at yahoo dot com <<<

Which is all well and good except for the minor fact that nobody was talking about renaming Atari DOS files, but rather the filenames of the ATR images that contain Atari files.
I could be a bit behind the times, but I don't know of any Atari 8-bit program that uses ATR images. DCM files, on the other hand, would cause some problems.

Perhaps one would want to download an ATR to his Atari then write it to an actual floppy disk. A file is a file. An ATR image is a file.

Ken Siders' great XFormer of course! It also handles DCM files.

Darek did the XFormer; Ken produced the AtrUtil image manager. My copy of Ver 1.13 reports an error attempting to load a .DCM file. Do some versions actually do that?

Oops, I meant DiskFormer, not XFormer. Yes, I think DiskFormer handles DCM files. You should be able to find the most recent of any of Ken's programs at his page, below.

Ver 1.13 of AtrUtil is the latest mentioned on Ken's page; has anyone had success using it to open a DisCommed file?

I think we're talking about different things here. The Atari never sees the ATR image filename. It doesn't matter what the image is named. The Emulator has to be able to understand the ATR filename. It then mounts that as an Atari disk drive, and only shows the contents, which will be the original names as the atari expects.
The only thing I can see what you said having an impact on was if someone was going to run a BBS on an atari, and put up the ATR images for download.

I think I mentioned this before, but you can convert/extract an ATR-image directly on 8-bit Atari, so it DOES matter...

A relatively easy, if time consuming, procedure for DiskTool or DiskMend...

ok a game for a atari 8 bit - can't remember very much about it, but it was a kind of fly around thing, with a simple green/blue sky/ground thing, and wireframe graphics for buildings. can't remember what the object of the game was either!
